Our mission:
We are dedicated to producing the ideal Miniature Horse whether for show or that special pet. TBD ranch breeds only award winning lines producing beautifully confirmed equine stock. We strive to conform to the "A" mini category as many of our animals are among the smallest on the west coast. Whether your looking for show stock or a unique pet Thistle Bury Downs has the miniature horse for you.
What is a miniature horse?
The designation of miniature horse is determined by the height of the animal, which is otherwise a horse. Depending on the particular breed registry involved a true miniature horse is usually less than 34–38 inches as measured from the last hairs of the mane, which are found at the withers to the ground. While miniature horses are the size of very small ponies, they retain horse characteristics and are considered "horses" due to their body proportion and genetic makeup.
Miniature horses are friendly and interact well with people and are often kept as family pets. Mini's exhibit natural horse behavior including a horses fight or flight instinct and must be treated like any other equine. They are sometimes trained as service animals, akin to assistance dogs for people with disabilities. While miniature horses can be trained to work indoors, kept as pets, or service animals they are still real horses and are healthier when allowed to live outdoors with proper shelter and room to run; however they generally need much less running room than full size horse.
Miniature horses are generally quite hardy, often living longer on average than some full-sized horse breeds; the average life span of miniature horses is from 25 to 35 years.
